In a world full of noise and turmoil, there is a meditation master whose smile and wisdom have illuminated the hearts of countless people. At the 2025 Tergar Asia Annual Retreat, we are honored to once again follow Mingyur Rinpoche on a journey of awakening.
Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche is one of the most respected meditation masters in contemporary Tibetan Buddhism. Known for his deep personal practice, warm and accessible teaching style, and innovative approach of integrating Buddhist wisdom with modern science, he has attracted hundreds of thousands of students worldwide.
Born in 1975 into a renowned Buddhist family in Nepal, Rinpoche is the son of the legendary meditation teacher Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche. He began meditation training from an early age, completing his first traditional three-year retreat at the age of 16. By his early 20s, he was already appointed as the retreat master of the Sherab Ling Monastery in India.
In addition to his deep training in traditional teachings such as Mahamudra and Dzogchen, Rinpoche has a life-long interest in neuroscience and psychology. He took part in a major study by Waisman Laboratory for Brain Imaging and Behavior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to explore the effects of meditation on the brain.
Rinpoche’s teaching style blends ancient wisdom with modern understanding, emphasizing the application of meditation in daily life to help people work with anxiety, fear, and other emotional challenges. His best-selling book The Joy of Living has been translated into more than 20 languages and widely read across the globe. He also founded the Tergar Meditation Community, which now has centers in over 30 countries and regions, with students across five continents.
In 2011, Rinpoche set aside all titles and roles to undertake a four-year wandering retreat, following in the footsteps of Milarepa. During this time, he faced a life-and-death challenge and experienced profound inner transformation. He later recounted this extraordinary journey in his book In Love with the World, sharing deep insights into the nature of life and mind.
Rinpoche’s teachings are widely cherished for his ability to convey profound Buddhist wisdom with humor and sincerity. He transforms complex principles into teachings that are accessible and practical for modern life, helping students cultivate awareness, compassion, and wisdom in their daily experience. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced practitioner, you will find inspiration and growth through his guidance.
